Detailed reference guide on how to program your HP 33s or HP 35s for the Civil Engineering PE Exam.

The programs and equations contained in this guide are matched to the current civil engineering PE exam specifications and are specifically designed to solve NCEES civil engineering exam questions. The guide contains simple instructions on how to use the programs, and summarizes each program, its applications, variables, program text, and miscellaneous notes. This guide helps the user become familiar with the programs and how they are used for standard question types. The guide is also a very useful reference, and is permitted into the exam room.

This product is more than a list of equations to be typed into the calculator. This product is a combination of programs and equations, that are expanded to incorporate the calculation steps involved in the standard NCEES questions. There are over 380 lines of program and equation text. Most of these lines of text are for programs, since each equation only counts as one line of text, regardless of its length. This product utilizes the HP 33s' full programming capabilities, and applies them to the CE PE exam. This is significantly more valuable than just typing in equations copied from the NCEES Supplied Reference Handbook, or other published study aid.

The Civil programs are most relevant to the subject matter of the morning breadth module of the exam and the afternoon "structural" or "water resources" depth module.

All of these programs have been carefully selected, reviewed and tested by two licensed professional engineers (names and license numbers available on request), and are guaranteed to be error-free. A lot of time has been spent developing and checking these programs and equations. The use of this product will provide greater accuracy and speed in tackling the numerical questions on the exam, and allow more time to be spent on the descriptive and abstract questions.

The programs are designed to give maximum flexibility to accommodate uncertainty in the format of the information presented in a question, for example, some of the programs for reinforced concrete beams can be used for rectangular or T-beams and can be used for beams with or without compression reinforcement. Diagrams are provided to clearly illustrate the forces, moments and other parameters that are being calculated. Instructions for using the programs are made as simple as possible in the guide. The guide is also a very useful reference, that is permitted into the exam.

The civil engineering program list is as follows (note: A few of the subjects listed below have more than one program, for maximum versatility and application to different question types)

Solution of simultaneous equations up to third order
Solution of polynomial equations up to fifth order
Area of regular polygons of any order

The calculator can be set to operate in either RPN (reverse polish notation) or regular algebraic mode. The chosen setting does not affect the operation of the engineering programs in the guide.

No programming skills are needed to enter or execute any of the programs. The instructions provided in each version of the program guide are very simple and all button presses are clearly indicated. The user will not have to refer back to the HP 33s User's Manual.

In April 2004, the NCEES began a policy of strictly enforcing the calculator policy, and the HP 33s is the most advanced RPN calculator that is permitted in these exams. The NCEES does permit pre-programmed calculators to be used during the exam, and there is no restriction on the data that may be programmed into a calculator provided that it is an approved model. The official NCEES calculator policy can be viewed at http://www.ncees.org/exams/calculators. The policy was updated on November 15, 2006, for the 2007 exams, and the HP 33s is still permitted.

Please refer to the feedback comments from PE candidates who have recently purchased this programmed calculator or guide, and used it in recent examinations. The Newcalc EBAY account has 100% positive feedback. Many users have indicated that they probably would not have passed without the help of these programs.

Shipping is by either UPS Ground or USPS Priority Mail. All items are shipped out within three days of receipt of payment.

If you already own an HP 33s calculator and would like to send it to Newcalc for programming, the total cost is $135. This includes entering all of the program data and providing a copy of the program guide. The calculator and payment check should be sent to Newcalc with a note indicating which exam it is to be programmed for. If paying by Paypal, please make payment directly to sales@newcalc.com, and include a note that you are sending your own calculator in for programming.
